What is OMBRE ?
OMBRE is a realtime 3D game engine developed by Léna Piquet (Froyok) since November 2022. This engine serves as the basis for the development of an unannounced game project. The engine has not been released to the public.
"Ombre" in the French word for shadow.
Why making another engine ?
There are many other game engines out there but they have either a long learning curve or are difficult to bend which make them unsuited to fit specific needs or requirements. OMBRE was born out of frustration to help answer precise creative needs.

Core features
OMBRE being a custom game engine, it presents both modern and uncommon functionalities.
Below is a short overview of some of them.
Physically Based Rendering (PBR)
Realistic surfaces and credible lighting rely on faithful material representation.
OMBRE implements modern PBR functions which helps simulating complex and realistic materials, but also provide advanced and accurate color representation.
Perfect sharp shadows
OMBRE uses shadow volumes to represent precise and sharp shadows of any objects in a scene.
The implementation relies on the use of compute shader to result in good performance.
Advanced effects
OMBRE is uses forward renderer at its core, making it easy to implement various and unique shading effects.
For example it supports just-in-time depth prepass for transparent surface rendering as well as layered glass refraction.
High-quality post processing
Post-processing is a core component to the look and feel of a final image and OMBRE features high-quality effects to help match a specific art direction.
OMBRE has high quality bloom/glare, lens-flares, depth of field, chromatic aberration, film grain, halation, and more.
